Harmonized System of Korea(HSK)
Korea Customs classifies imported goods on the basis
of the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System
since July 1, 1988. (Before this, CCCN was used.)
International Convention on the Harmonized Commodity
and Coding System comprises Main Body and Annex (6-digit
nomenclature, General Rules of the Interpretation of
the Harmonized system, legal notes for the Sections
and Chapters.)

Korea reflects General Rules of the Interpretation of
the Harmonized system, legal notes for the Sections and Chapters
in an annex to its Customs Act. Six (6) -digit nomenclatures
is reflected in Rules for the Interpretation of the Tariff Schedule
for [the Korea's Tariff Schedule] which is an integral part
of Korea Customs Act by inserting a phrase "The customs
classification which is not provided in this Tariff Schedule
shall be determined according to the International Convention
on the harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System."
When 10 digit commodity classification code for a material
is applied through HSK system
(for example, HSK code for raw garlic is 0710.80.2000) tariff
rate is set according to the
number. (for raw garlic, basic tariff 30% ,conventional tariff
28.7% currently in 2002, plus
emergency tariff is now in effect)So correct classification
is vital for importers to coax
exact calculation on import cost.
